Porongurup, Great Southern
Sustainable Viticulture
Winemaker: Rob Diletti

Towards the end of 1981 the 55 hectare property was specifically selected by Angelo and Wendy Diletti to grow premium quality table-wine grapes. The choice was based on the elevation, an approximate eastern slope, well-drained soils and excellent water catchment potential.

The vineyard is located on Porongurup Road in the shire of Plantagenet. It is set high in the Porongurup Ranges, which are 40 km north of Western Australia’s south coast regional centre Albany.

The elevation, 300 metres, and the position of the vineyard, which exposes the vines to cooling south-east breezes results in a prolonged growing season. This enables varieties like Riesling and Pinot Noir which are heat sensitive and early to ripen, to develop maximum varietal flavour and ripeness while maintaining natural acidity and balance.

The Great Southern Region has been making award winning Rieslings for decades now and Castle Rock Wines is a part of this remote yet picturesque region. Castle Rocks first Riesling received a gold medal solidifying their confidence.

The vineyard has a cool and elevated northerly aspect, resulting in intensely flavoured wines. The winery built in 2001, marked a new era, and gave further control over the winemaking process combined with the high standard of viticulture. Owned by the Diletti family, son Rob holds the reigns and his wines are synonymous in the region, he is considered one of the leaders in Australian Riesling production.
