Winemaker: Sam Brewer

Yarran Wines are one of the few small family wine producers in the Riverina Region of NSW. Yarran is owned by Lorraine and son Sam Brewer. When Sam returned to the family estate, he brought with him a wealth of experience from various large operations such as Southcorp & De Bortoli as well as a load of International experience gained in other countries.

For the last 10 years there has been a continued focus on developing our vineyard to a lower yielding, higher quality, more efficient and sustainable operation. In recent times we have embarked on organically farming part of the vineyard and in the next year we will see the certification process nearing completion. In conjunction with organics we have been using a number of techniques such as hand pruning, foliage positioning and shoot thinning which are very hands on but the increase in fruit flavours and intensity is worth the extra work. We have also replanted parts of the vineyard to varieties (such as Montepulciano) that really suit the warm, dry region and are more sustainable in the longer term.

With this accumulated knowledge, he utilised his skill in the family’s vineyard making very expressive varietal wines from the estate, that are not just extremely well priced for today’s palate but taste fantastic as well.

Yarran Wines has been awarded the James Halliday ‘Darkhorse Winery Of The Year’ for 2021. Yarran are an extremely proud recipients of this award which recognises not just the brand to be one to watch but also the years invested in building the winery and wines.
